The GCSE maths non-calculator paper
One paper in three has no calculator. It rewards quick, reliable written methods.
The methods to have ready
Multiplying and dividing whole numbers and decimals on paper, working with fractions and mixed numbers, converting between fractions, decimals and percentages, and rounding to estimate an answer before you work it out.
| Method | Example |
|---|---|
| Long multiplication | 47 × 36 |
| Short division | 936 ÷ 4 |
| Fractions | ¾ + ⅖ |
| Estimating | 19.8 × 3.1 ≈ 20 × 3 |
Check as you go
Estimate first, then compare your answer with the estimate. If they are far apart, look for a slipped digit or a misplaced decimal point.

- Work it out
