What examiners ask about a melody in an extract: the interval of a leap, the range, the climax, steps and leaps, and the devices that shape it, sequence and imitation.
Steps and leaps
A leap is usually followed by a step back the other way, which keeps the line smooth.
Most melodies move mainly by step (to the next letter name), with leaps (a 3rd or more) for variety. When a question marks two notes x and y, they are usually a leap apart: name the interval from the lower note up.
