The four notes outside the chord a Grade 6 extract decorates its melody with, passing note, auxiliary note, appoggiatura and anticipation, and a three-question test that tells them apart.

First, is it really outside the chord?

Over chord I (C, E, G), x is D: not a note of the chord

A starred note does not belong to the chord sounding with it: collect the chord's notes from every stave and check before you name it.

More on this

A note marked with a star, or asked about by its bar, is a note that does not belong to the chord sounding with it. If the starred note is one of the chord's notes, read the question again.
