How it works

This tuner listens through your microphone and shows the nearest note and how far it is from it in cents (a hundredth of a semitone). Choose Chromatic for any instrument or your voice, or pick guitar, bass, violin, viola, cello or ukulele to tune each open string. The reference pitch can be set from A4 = 415 Hz (Baroque pitch) to 466 Hz. Nothing is recorded or sent anywhere: the pitch is worked out in the page.

  1. Press Start listening and allow the microphone when your browser asks.
  2. Play one note at a time, close to the microphone, and let it ring.
  3. Watch the needle: left is flat, right is sharp. Within 5 cents it turns green.
  4. For a string instrument, choose it under Tuning: the closest open string lights up.
  5. Press Stop when you have finished. The microphone switches off.

Tips

  • Tune up to the note from below: it settles the string and keeps it in tune for longer.
  • A quiet room helps. Background music or talking can confuse any tuner.
  • If your group tunes to 442, set the reference to 442 so you match them.

FAQ

How accurate is the tuner?
On a clear, steady note it reads to within a cent or two. The needle shows the middle of the last few readings, so a held note looks steady.
Is my microphone recorded?
No. The sound is analysed in your browser and never stored or sent. The microphone stops when you press Stop or leave the page.
What is a cent?
A cent is one hundredth of a semitone. Most listeners hear a difference of about 5 cents or more on held notes.
Why is A4 = 440 Hz the default?
440 Hz is the international standard concert pitch. Some orchestras tune to 442, and Baroque ensembles often use 415.
