Flag and map quiz

Name the flag, find the country, learn the capitals.

How it works

Pick Flags, Map or Capitals, then choose where in the world and a level. Starter keeps to well-known countries; Expert adds every one. Answer by choosing from four or by typing, and typing forgives accents and small slips. Three right in a row starts a combo that raises your score. Missed countries come back in later rounds until they stick, and your best scores stay on this device.

  1. Choose a mode: Flags, Map or Capitals. In Map, pick Name it (a country is filled in) or Find it (tap the country named).
  2. Choose where: the whole world, a continent or one region, and a level from Starter to Expert.
  3. Answer by choosing from four, or by typing. Keys 1 to 4 choose, and Enter moves on after a miss.
  4. Three right in a row starts a combo. Time trial adds a bonus for quick answers; Untimed is the default.
  5. After the round, the countries to revisit come back in your next rounds until they stick.

Tips

  • Play one region at a time. Neighbours are easier to learn together than scattered across the world.
  • Small countries get a ring and a closer view. In Find it, tap near one and the map zooms in so you can choose.
  • Text mode swaps flags and shapes for clues, such as a capital or the countries next door.

FAQ

How many countries are in the quiz?
196: the countries in the UK government's list of country names (the FCDO geographical names index). That is the 193 members of the United Nations plus Kosovo, Palestine and Vatican City. Country names follow the same list.
Why are some places not asked about?
The quiz asks only about the countries in that list. Territories such as Greenland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Western Sahara are drawn on the map but never asked, and areas whose status is disputed are never a question.
Do I have to spell the answer exactly?
No. Capital letters, accents and punctuation do not matter, a small slip is forgiven, and other common names count too, such as Burma, Holland or Czech Republic.
Are my scores saved?
Your best scores and the countries to revisit are saved in this browser on this device. Clearing your browser data deletes them.
