How it works
Vocab Trainer is a quick multiple-choice quiz for building your vocabulary. Practise with the built-in SAT words, academic words and science terms, or quiz yourself on any deck you made in Flashcards. It works well for test prep, English classes and learning the key terms of a subject.
- Choose a word pack from the menu: SAT words, Academic words, Science terms, or one of your Flashcards decks with at least 4 cards.
- Set the direction with the mode button: Word to definition shows a word and asks for its meaning, Definition to word does the reverse.
- Pick one of the four answers by clicking it or pressing 1 to 4 on your keyboard.
- If you are wrong, the correct answer is highlighted and shown underneath. The next question appears after a moment, or press Enter to move on.
- Keep an eye on the Correct and Answered counters, and press Restart for a fresh round.
Tips
- Switch to Definition to word once a pack feels easy. Recalling the word from its meaning is harder, and closer to how you use words in your own writing.
- Words you get wrong come back more often during a round, so keep going until your misses stop showing up.
- For a class word list, build a deck in Flashcards and pick it here. The Study, Quiz and Game links at the top move between modes with the same deck.
- After answering, say the word in a sentence of your own. Using a word once makes it much easier to remember than just recognising it.
FAQ
- Can I use my own words?
- Yes. Create a deck in Flashcards with the word as the question and its meaning as the answer. Any deck with at least 4 cards appears in the pack menu here.
- Why does a pack need at least 4 words?
- Every question has four answer choices, and the wrong ones are taken from the same pack, so it needs at least four entries to build a question.
- Is my score saved?
- Your chosen pack and quiz direction are remembered in this browser's local storage on this device, and your Flashcards decks are stored the same way. The score counters reset when you reload or press Restart. Nothing is uploaded unless you sign in to an optional free Brainlag account, which syncs it across devices. Clearing your browser data deletes it.
