How it works

Oddword is a word game for a group in the same room, with everyone on their own phone. All players get the same secret word except the impostors, who get a different one. Take turns describing your word without saying it, then talk it over and vote on who had the odd one out.

  1. One person types their name and presses Create a room. They become the host, and an 8-character room code appears.
  2. Everyone else types the code and their name on their own phone and presses Join. Players appear in the lobby.
  3. The host picks how many impostors (fewer than the number of players) and a word category: Surprise mix, Animals, Food & Drink, Places, Sports, Around the house, Nature, or a Custom list of at least 3 words.
  4. The host presses Start round. Each phone shows that player's secret word and whether they are a Crewmate or an Impostor.
  5. Go round the group, each giving one clue about the word without saying it. Then discuss and vote out loud on who the impostor is.

Tips

  • Good clues are vague enough that an impostor cannot guess the word, but clear enough that the crew can tell you know it.
  • If you are the impostor, listen to the clues before yours. They tell you a lot about the real word, so you can blend in.
  • Turn it into revision with a Custom list: vocabulary for a language test, science keywords or historical figures. Describing a term in your own words is good recall practice.

FAQ

Do players need an app or an account?
No. Oddword runs in the browser: each player opens this page and joins with the room code. Nothing to install, no sign-in.
Is anything saved or shared?
Unlike most Brainlag tools, Oddword does not keep the game in your browser's local storage. To keep every phone in sync, the room code, the names players type and each round's words go through Brainlag's word-game server. No account is needed, so a first name or nickname is all you have to enter.
What happens if I refresh the page or lose signal?
Your browser remembers which room you joined, so after a refresh you go straight back into the same room. If the connection drops, the page keeps retrying until it is back.
